Your $2 Bill May Be Worth a Lot More Than You Think

Many people have believed that the $2 bill is “unlucky” or even cursed, but the reality is quite different. In fact, it may bring quite a bit of luck—along with a few thousand dollars.

Historically overlooked as the neglected stepsibling of the $1 bill, the $2 note has often been ridiculed by many Americans. Some even mistakenly think $2 bills are rare, no longer printed, or have gone out of circulation. According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), “For much of their history, $2 notes have been unpopular, viewed as unlucky or simply awkward for transactions.” Some even went so far as to return the bills to the Treasury with torn corners, believing that doing so would reverse the supposed curse.

However, not all $2 bills are created equal—some can actually be worth thousands of dollars.

The Value of a $2 Bill

While the $2 bill is best known for featuring Thomas Jefferson’s portrait, it has undergone several design changes over the years, including variations in the front and back designs, photo placement, and color additions. These changes can significantly impact the value of the note.

To determine the value of your $2 bill, start by checking the year and the color of the seal. Crisp, uncirculated bills with red, brown, or blue seals from 1862 to 1896 can fetch as much as $5,000 at U.S. Currency Auctions. Even if your bill is slightly worn, circulated bills from the same time period can still be worth up to $1,100.

The auction site notes that collectors determine the value based on factors such as printing method and location. Additionally, some $2 bills feature “fancy serial numbers,” which can drastically increase their value. If you happen to find one of these rare bills, it could be worth up to $6,000.
