This saying is a painful lesson you learn as a young adult. It’s very easy to get wrapped up in all the gossip when your young and don’t have a lot of experience, but what you realise very quickly is to steer clear of people who gossip about everyone around them because what makes you think you will be spared.
It will only be a matter of time before they take what you say and spread it about. People who gossip are not selective on loyalty. They almost get a buzz out of it, so they won’t care who they talk about, even if you thought you was safe.
