Things You DIDN’T KNOW About Everyday Objects
Have you ever sat and wondered what is the purpose of an objects design? For example, why do doughnuts have a hole in the middle? why do golf balls have dimples? Or what’s the point of the tiny pockets on jeans?
There are so many questions that need answering. While some things are ‘just because’ it turns out other objects have hidden features that you probably didn’t even know existed.
Keep reading to find out the interesting reasoning behind everyday objects. Did you already know any of these?
1.Did you know that certain door handles can disinfect themselves! Copper, brass, alumunium, or iron, are natural antimicrobial materials. This makes them perfect materials to make into door handles as after a few hours any bacteria on them will die. For example more than 99.9% of E. coli microbes are killed after just 1–2 hours on copper, whereas on stainless steel surfaces, the microbes can survive for weeks.
2.Have you heard the theories around the hidden message of the colours on packaging. The coloured circles on packing are not just there to be pretty, and are code for the chemicals used. It is actually just the printer’s colour block. These basically help tell you what hues of colours were used to print the packing. While it is not as interesting as what we thought and is of no use to us as the consumers, it is very important for the production company. For example if they need to go back to it in the future, they know exactly what colours they used.
3.Have you ever taken notice when you put gas in your car that at the top of the pipe there is a metal looking thing that connects the pump to the machine ? This is actually two magnets. The purpose of these magnets is to help save your life. In any rare case that you forget to remove the pump nozzle from you car before driving off, these magnets will pull apart, stopping you from pulling down the whole gas station and stopping the whole place from potentially blowing up!
4. Did you know golf balls used to be perfectly round, with none of those dimples that you see on golf balls today! Over time golfers realised that the best balls to play with were those with the most dents and bumps. The manufactures realised this and therefore changed the design to the textured pattern we are used to seeing today, that pattern is to resemble the old dimples on the old golf balls.
5.Why do microwaves have those little black dots all over the front glass? This is not actually to block your sight, but instead to block the radiation. The mesh with tiny holes on the glass helps the microwaves bounce inside the microwave helping to warm up your food, instead of coming through the glass at you. FUN FACT aluminium foil blocks microwaves which is why you should never put it inside a microwave, as it can cause a fire, or your machine to spark and explode.
6. Why are there 3 lines on a headphone jack, and do they even serve a purpose? The answer is yes, they are very useful! If you push the jack into the hole until the first line then you will only get sound from the life side. If you push it in to the second line, then you will only get sound on the right side. And finally, if you push it all the way in, with all the lines in, then you will be able to listen to your music or whatever through both the left and the right side. Amazing!
7.The ridges on letters F and J on laptop and computer keyboards have an interesting purpose. If you have not already noticed, this is where most people rest their fingers while in the typing position. The bumps help your fingers find the optical position on the keyboard.
8. I am sure at some point we all believed the lie that was rubbers with the blue side was so you can erase pen ink. While these rubbers do exist, (they are usually coloured red) the blue side sadly (as we all figured out when trying) does NOT erase pen ink. Don’t be too disappointed though, the blue side does still have a purpose. It is actually meant for deeper pencil marks that are harder to erase.
9.Does your car rear view mirror have a tab on the bottom? If it does, then you can move this like a switch for a day mode and a night mode! The night mode darkens your mirror to help stop the glare at night from the headlight beams off the cars behind you.
10. Ever wondered whats the point of those little pockets that are on the front of nearly every pair of jeans. These mini pockets were originally used back in the day when everyone carried pocket watches. The space was made specifically so everyone could put their watch safely in their pocket. However this is obviously a dying tradition, as nowadays no one carries a pocket watch around. The feature still looks nice though.
