Facts You Never Knew About The Most Famous Dress In History
No one can forget the amazing creation that is the wedding dress Lady Diana Spencer wore for her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981. The dress was a heavily guarded secret until the big day when she became Princess of Wales and it was seen by a global television audience of 750 million in 74 countries.
The design is far from subtle; with the big puffy sleeves, ruffles, bows and a spectacular train that is 25 feet in length, which is the longest in Royal history. However, despite being so big and bold, its actually the subtle, tiny hidden details that really make this dress a stunning piece of art.
There is a saying that dates back to 19th-century which is a guide to what a bride should wear on her wedding day “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe”. Including these things into the bride’s wedding attire is said to bring good luck, protection and prosperity to the newly wed couple.
So here are some facts we bet you didn’t know about the most talked about dress in history.
Something Old – The dress had something old incorporated into it with a panel of antique lace that had originally belong to Prince Charles’ great-grandmother Queen Mary.
Something New – Like the dress, Diana’s shoes were also hand made, in a one of a kind design. Sadly they were not very visible however they had just as much thought and effort went into making them. They too had lace and was embellished with over 500 sequins and over 100 pearls. And underneath the small heels had their initials C and D painted on either side. The shoes, took six months to make.
Something Borrowed – Diana wore the Spencer tiara which is a family heirloom as her something borrowed. It is made up of a variety of different jewellery that had been gifted to the family over the years. Both of Diana’s elder sisters and Sister in law wore the tiara at their own weddings in tradition.
Something blue – The designers stitched a tiny blue bow into the waistband of the wedding dress as the perfect something blue.
A sixpence in your shoe – For good luck (and rather than the whole a sixpence in your shoe) there was even a diamond-studded horseshoe sewn onto the label of the wedding dress.
Another not very well know fact is….
The Rings – Another hidden detail is that the couple’s wedding rings were crafted from Welsh gold. The tradition of using Welsh gold within the wedding rings of the Royal Family dates back to 1923
