What It Means When A Person Who Has Passed Away Appears In Your Dream
Losing someone close is a part of life, but the death of certain people can affect us deeply. Have you ever dreamed of someone who’s passed away? These dreams might hold a deeper meaning.
Grieving is different for everyone; some cry, others become silent, and some avoid the topic. But one thing many share is dreaming about loved ones who have passed. Dreams are controlled by our subconscious, and dreaming of a deceased person might carry significance.
Can dreams be messages from the dead? Patrick McNamara, a neurology and psychiatry professor at Boston University, calls these “visitation dreams.” In these dreams, the deceased appear alive. McNamara believes these dreams help with grief and loss, based on his own experience with dreams of his late parents.
Studies support this idea. A 2014 study in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care found that dreams of the deceased often help with healing, and they can include comforting images like the deceased being healthy and at peace. Another study in 2016 found that many people who dream of the deceased feel more connected to them and believe in the afterlife.
Psychologist Jennifer E. Shorter has researched visitation dreams and found that they have four main characteristics:
- The people in your visitation dream look like they did when they were alive, although often healthier or younger.
- The deceased often says something about how they are now, for example, that they are fine.
- The message in the dream is experienced more telepathically than in the form of physical presence.
- The dream is often calm and organized, almost harmonious.
