One user on Mumsnet shared her disappointment about receiving a “small” engagement ring, hoping for sympathy and advice, but her post sparked outrage instead.
The user shared: “My partner proposed and gave me the ring he had chosen—a diamond solitaire in white gold. I was overjoyed and excited to say yes, but I was disappointed when I first saw the ring. The first thought that came to mind was ‘small.’ There’s nothing wrong with the type of ring itself—I’d have picked a solitaire too—but it’s the whole package: the color of the gold, the setting, the small stone, and the relatively chunky shoulders.
His salary is close to a six-figure sum, and he’s generally very generous. Having seen the receipt, I know he paid 1,800 euros for it—less than I’d imagined he’d spend on something so significant. I know he’ll be more disappointed in me for making a fuss over it when, in his eyes, it’s fine and there’s nothing wrong with it, rather than being upset that I’m not truly happy with it.”
She added: “Someone at work told him, ‘If she makes it all about the ring, then she’s not the girl for you.’
Ideally, I would’ve loved for us to pick the ring together and have a special day finding one we both liked. Since I’ll be wearing this ring every day, and it’s such a significant piece of jewelry, I wanted to love it, but I just don’t.”
The post sparked a range of responses. Many were appalled by what they saw as ungratefulness, especially considering the ring cost roughly $1,675, a significant sum for most people.
