The lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive insect that should be eliminated immediately if spotted. Native to China, it was first discovered in the U.S. in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, it has spread widely, causing significant harm to both agriculture and ecosystems. Lanternflies feed on the sap of a variety of plants and trees, weakening them and promoting the growth of sooty mold due to the sticky honeydew they excrete. This mold further damages the plants by obstructing photosynthesis.

Lanternflies are easily recognizable. Adult insects are about an inch long, with gray wings marked by black spots and vibrant red and black underwings. Nymphs begin black with white spots and gradually turn red as they mature. Using a needle-like mouthpart, they pierce plant tissue to suck out sap, draining the plant’s vitality.

If you spot a lanternfly, it’s crucial to take immediate action. Squash the adults or nymphs on sight, and don’t forget to destroy any egg masses, which resemble gray mud smears. Scrape the egg masses into a bag and add alcohol or hand sanitizer to kill the eggs.
