Hippo Casually Found Wandering Around A Gas Station
A video of a hippo casually walking into a gas station in the town of St Lucia in northern KwaZulu-Natal South Africa has gone viral.
Marie Stubbe, who filmed the video, said she was stopped across the street from the gas station when she spotted the wild animal. Caught by surprise she quickly pulled out her phone to capture the scene in front of her. Other passers by can be seen gathering in front of the store to watch the Hippo on his evening stroll.
The video was uploaded to The OK Express Facebook page for everyone to see.
We are pleased to see the convenient store also let viewers know the hippo was left to wander and wasn’t harmed. “The hippo returned back to the lake after grazing around town.”
According to some social media users, hippos strolling in the streets is a common occurrence in the area. When interviewed, the person who took the video revealed that hippos will wander the town looking for grass to eat. The town, St Lucia, is surrounded by a large and extensive natural habitat for hippos including a lake.
Although this video is lovely and shows cohabitation can happen peacefully we must remember Hippos can be extremely dangerous. They can run at nearly 20mph on land and although they are herbivores they will use their huge mouths and tusks to fight if they feel threatened.
