She Did Not Expect This When She First Met Her Future Mother-In-Law
Years ago, when I had just started dating my now husband, we went and visited his folks.
He called her to make sure they knew we were coming. It was a four hour drive and when we got there dinner was ready for us. His mother had timed it so dinner was done just as we arrived. This might not seem like a very big deal but for me at the time it was mind-blowing.
I have some pretty strict dietary restrictions, (celiacs and lots of allergies) so it’s a real bother for most people to cook for me. His mother went above and beyond. Not only was the entire dinner gluten- free but it was some of my favourite foods. And she was friendly and didn’t expect me to clean or fix anything.
I was amazed at having a full meal ready for me, and then the next day she made u breakfast and then lunch and then dinner again. The entire day she offered to spend time with us but didn’t demand it because she knew we were our own people. There were no expectations of reciprocity.
By the end of the day I was hiding in my SO’s bedroom crying my eyes out because I didn’t know how to handle someone being so nice like that.
It was the first time I had really felt mothered in my life. I knew then where my SO learned to be such an awesome guy.
When I eventually married my SO, his family made me feel like I joined a real family.
Your parents are always a big influence on you. They help you make you who you are. I never had a motherly figure in my life because my parents died in a car accident when I was small.. But in the last few years my mother-in-law has taught me to be generous, kind and happy. Being nice to others not only helps you become a better person but you might also unintentionally change someone’s life forever.
