13 Myths About The Human Body Debunked

We have all at least once in our lifetime been told a ‘fact’ that we have just taken as gospel without really digging a bit deeper to actually ensure its true. While more often than not its not a big deal, when it involves your health and your body its important to get the facts right. So we are about to bust some of the more popular myths about the human body.

1.We only use 10% of our brain
Most of the brain cortex works at full capacity even when we are asleep.

2.Your eyesight deteriorates if you read in the dark or on a monitor
Your eyes get tired quickly this way, but recover after rest.

3.Brain cells stop growing when you reach adulthood
Neurons flourish and change throughout your entire life.

4.Deoxygenated blood is blue, which is why your veins are blue.
Your deoxygenated blood isn’t blue. It’s a result of how light penetrates your skin.

5.Humans only have 5 senses: sight, hearing, smell, tactile sense and taste.
We have at least 21 senses. Example: sense of balance and temperature.

6.Its easier to catch a cold when it’s actually cold or raining.
Colds are caused by viruses, not air temperature.

7.Our heart skips a beat when we sneeze.
The heart’s rhythm sometimes changes when we sneeze, but it never stops.

8.Sweat can remove toxins from your body
Sweat glands cool down your body

9.Carrots improve eyesight.
Carrots prevent muscle degeneration, but they don’t improve your sight

10.You swallow eight spiders a year while sleeping.
While sleeping our bodies give off vibrations from breathing, pumping blood, and snoring. Spiders are very attuned to vibrations so this alone would be a deterrent for them.

11.Split ends can be cured by shampoo or hair conditioner
You can only get rid of split ends by cutting them.

12.Touching a frog or toad can give you warts.
Warts are caused by a human virus.They are caught via touch, either skin-to-skin or through an object that both people handled

13.Shaved hair grows back darker and thicker than it was before.
The hair may appear different when it grows back because the original hair had a tapered tip; the newly cut hair is blunt at the end making it feel thicker.
