While everyone in a community can use a little help from neighbors and friends, we all know that those who need it the most are often the elderly and people with disabilities. Fearing they may be seen as a burden, these individuals rarely ask for help, even when they desperately need it.
James, a plumber originally from Liverpool, has made it his mission to change that. He offers “free plumbing for life” to those in need, ensuring that these vulnerable members of society have one less thing to worry about.
“We need to be a human race, to look out for each other,” James said, emphasizing the importance of community. While his kind act has earned him internet fame, James humbly credits his actions as “a community effort.”
When asked what he gets out of this selfless mission, James simply says it makes him feel good inside. “It makes me feel human, humble, and a little giddy inside… I want to expand this service across the country. I will never give up the fight,” he shared.
James hopes to take his work beyond Burnley and has already seen other plumbers offering their help. The viral attention around his story could be just the boost needed to help his cause grow.
“I’ve got other plumbers offering help. My hope is to get Depher national, in every city and town,” James said, referring to his plumbing service’s expansion.
One message of support came from Bruce Drury, a 63-year-old semi-retired plumber, who shared his own experience:
“Your story of James Anderson, the caring plumber who charged $0 for repairing an elderly lady’s boiler, really was a pleasure to read. I am 63, also a plumber, semi-retired, and I’ve either offered a large discount or, if the job took only 10 minutes, no charge. My boss, who had an ailing parent, truly understood how much our clients appreciated it.
So hands up to you, James—you are setting a great example for us fellow plumbers. Our job is extremely hard and dangerous at times, and giving our services to the elderly is something they truly appreciate.”
