For this to occur, the bottle needs to be full. The combination of water and plastic can create a magnifying effect, potentially setting fire to the interior of the car or a nearby plastic object.

To prevent this risk, firefighters recommend storing bottled water in the trunk if it must be kept in the vehicle.
